New York Minute (2004) A New York minute is apparently long
enough for Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen (playing twins, of course) to cut class, attend a Simple Plan video shoot, make a speech
at a scholarship competition, fall in love, do a dance number, steal a senator's dog and, horror of horrors, mess up their
hair. Wow, there's more double trouble in this silly comedy than Ferris Bueller could even dream of. It's all simplistic,
wacky stuff (slightly better than the duo's direct-to-video misadventures) and only made bearable with appearances by Eugene
Levy as a sad-sack truancy officer and Andy Richter as an adopted Chinese mafia assassin--both on the cuties' collective tail.
The sisters learn a little about getting along in the end, but all you'll get is a passable few hours of screwball teen comedy
clichés and two almost-adults running around in nothing but terrycloth towels. And that doesn't quite cut it in the big city.
Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (2003) When it comes to celestial bodies, these
Angels are--again--heaven-sent. A high hotness factor, however, doesn't mean this movie is full of intriguing dialogue, complex
relationships and multilayered performances. This is music-video director McG we're talking about here, folks, so Full
Throttle is all about cranking up the volume and puttin' the booty on display. Half of the movie is in slo-mo for cryin'
out loud! There's a plot about some government gadget falling into the wrong hands and a bad Angel (sexy fortysomething Demi
Moore) who's trying to stop the tantalizing threesome of Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu. But really, who cares?
While some of the sloppy CGI sucks, there's a new outfit for every scene, a quick-witted Bernie Mac as a new Bosley and a
great CSI send-up. Hang on to your tub of popcorn and enjoy.
